Steward ownership is a hot topic. Although the number of Dutch companies adopting this alternative ownership structure is still relatively limited, this subject is receiving increasing attention among entrepreneurs, politicians, lawyers, and investors. The cause of this is the widely conducted discussion on the social responsibility of companies and the role that (institutional) shareholders play in it. In this article, I will discuss the concept of steward ownership within Dutch legal practice, specifically addressing the points of attention when structuring equity investments in steward-owned companies.
